Grinders are the most confusing category of submersible pumps. Even seasoned professionals ask for a "Grinder" when what is needed is a lower head, lower cost sewage pump.

 

A grinder is typically a higher-powered (1HP and greater) pump fitted with sharp cutters to shred solids and move them under high pressure usually in a relatively small diameter pipe. Grinders are most commonly used for lower flows and high pressure or higher head applications. A grinder is normally used when pumping into a pressure sewer system or up steep grades.

 

The typical residential 2 HP Grinder Pump can pump 40 GPM @ 60' of head. It may have internal capacitors or a control panel may be required.  Better grinders have triple-seals non-wicking cord design, are grit-resistant and have silicon carbide seals with a secondary lip seal for added protection.  Most have hardened 440c stainless steel cutter assembly and effectively grinds domestic sewage into a fine slurry, heavy-duty upper and lower ball bearing cutter assembly ,  shredding ring and grinding impeller, 8300 cuts per second - 1/2 million cuts per minute impeller, ductile iron for long life, recessed (Vortex) design reduces bearing load / increases bearing life and prevents clogging, full mechanical seal (Silicone/Carbide) and secondary lip seal, capacitor start/run design internal, automatic overload protection, dual ball bearings, oil-filled for consistent bearing lubrication and maximum motor cooling, 230 Volt, single phase.
